The Surana family, based in Chennai, is a remarkable household that has achieved and maintained ISO 9000 certification for the past 18 years. They are the first and only Indian family to receive this prestigious certification. Visitors to the ISO 9000 Certified Surana household in Chennai are welcomed not just as guests but as temporary customers. They are encouraged to rate their experience of hospitality, including the quality of food and service, through a feedback form.

The Surana family follows a structured approach within their household, with each member assigned specific roles and responsibilities in accordance with ISO guidelines. The head of the household, a 68-year-old individual, serves as the Household Head, while his 63-year-old wife is the Household Representative. Their daughter-in-law holds the role of Management Representative, and their son plays the role of a loyal customer. Each family member is provided with an individual manual of work instructions aligned with their designated roles.

Similar to ISO-certified companies and organizations in various industries, the Surana & Surana Household in Chennai is dedicated to upholding international standards in quality management and quality assurance. They focus on personal hygiene, housekeeping, food catering, guest management, and facility maintenance. Regular purchases, particularly of perishable items like fruits and vegetables, are made from certified vendors with strong ratings for quality and hygiene. The three domestic helpers adhere to a daily checklist for cleaning and maintenance tasks.

The Surana family has streamlined their daily menu planning, revising it only once a month to save time. They meticulously label every item in their kitchen and storeroom, following ISO guidelines. Pictorial labels on clean containers reflect the motto, "Everything in its place and a place for everything." The household strictly avoids food containing preservatives or chemical coatings, and their meals are served with remarkable precision.

To maintain their ISO certification, the Surana family undergoes periodic internal audits and two annual audits conducted by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), which is the certifying authority. It's noteworthy that these audits come at an annual cost of Rs 90,000 for India's first ISO Certified Surana household.
